Signs He Is Emotionally Unavailable, Even When He Seems Interested
· 8 min read · by Dr. Eva Assogba
Emotional unavailability rarely looks like a man who ignores you. More often it looks like warmth that never deepens, effort that never stays, and a connection you are always working to hold together. Here are the quiet signs, and what to do with what you see.
I remember dating this guy who always had one problem or another.
I became not just his confidante, but also the person responsible for providing solutions.
He had so much debt at the time, and because I worked at a bank, I made it my job to find a way for him to consolidate it.
I would use my own money, take a plane to see him out of state, and cook for him.
He would tell me I was lucky to live near my parents while his were back home.
He would remind me that he had to wake up early for work while I could sleep a little longer.
Somewhere in my mind, I believed that if I could help him fix a situation that had nothing to do with me, the complaining and the comparison would stop.
But it was never enough.
One day, I woke up after cooking and doing all these things for him.
There was not an ounce of gratitude.
There were only more complaints.
And I realized I was trying to become Jesus, the savior, for this man.
Whew, Lordt.
Here is the part I want you to hear.
He was not cold to me.
I was his confidante.
He brought me his problems and I helped him look for answers.
If you had asked me back then whether he was interested, I would have said yes, of course.
But interested and available are two different things, and it took me a while to see it.
Interest is not the same as availability Interest is how he feels about you.
Availability is whether he is able and willing to actually build something with you.
A man can enjoy you, call you, even need you, and still have no room for you.
What made it hard was not that he never cared.
He cared enough to keep me close, but not in a way that gave me a secure place in his life.
That is why emotional unavailability can be difficult to accept.
There may be real affection, real conversations, and real moments of closeness.
But none of those things automatically become intention, consistency, or a relationship you can safely rest in.
And one bad week does not make a man unavailable.
Everybody has off seasons.
What you are looking at is the shape of things over time.
Does the closeness grow, or does it keep starting over? If you feel close to him and unsure of him at the same time, that is not you being confused.
That is information.
The signs worth paying attention to Maybe you never bought a plane ticket or researched a man's debt.
Maybe your version was rewriting a simple text so you would not sound demanding.
Maybe it was pretending you did not care about the plans he never confirmed.
The details may be different, but the pattern is the same.
You kept removing pieces of yourself to make the connection easier for him to maintain.
So here is what it can look like for you.
It started strong and then thinned out.
At first there was so much attention.
Then less, and less, and you keep waiting for the beginning to come back.
Maybe you scroll up in your messages just to read the early ones again.
If you have done that, you are not only missing him.
You are missing who he was for those first few weeks.
He tells you about his past, but not about your next month.
He opens up about his family, his money, his stress.
It feels deep.
But when you ask something simple, like are we seeing each other next weekend, the answer gets soft.
Maybe.
We will see.
Him sharing his pain with you is not the same as him making room for you.
You edit yourself before you even speak.
You type a two line text and sit there rewriting it.
You take out the question.
You add a laughing emoji so it does not sound serious.
You delete the part about how you feel.
By the time you send it, there is nothing of you left in it.
If you have been there, please read you are not too much .
You are carrying the whole thing.
For me it was the planning, the flights, the cooking, his debt.
For you it might be every plan, every check in, every hard conversation.
Ask yourself honestly.
If you stopped, would anything keep going? He comes back, but nothing gets repaired.
Some men disappear for a few days and then return warm and casual, like nothing happened.
No sorry.
No conversation.
Just good morning beautiful, and you are supposed to pick up where you left off.
And part of you is so relieved.
That return has its own pull.
I wrote more about that pattern in When He Comes Back After Silence .
Why we stay long enough to wonder I have to be honest about my part too.
Nobody made me buy those plane tickets.
I chose to make his debt my project.
I thought that if I helped him fix his problems, the complaining would stop and things would finally feel steady.
So many of the women I coach do the same thing.
Not because something is wrong with them, but because they are good at love.
They see his potential.
They understand his past.
They believe patience will pay off.
And when the good moments come unpredictably, they feel bigger.
You start working harder for the next one.
That is how overgiving sneaks in.
If this keeps happening to you, sit with why you keep attracting unavailable men .
If understanding him has started costing you yourself, The Cost of Being the "Understanding" Woman will help you see the pattern clearly.
What God showed me about the fruit Each tree is recognized by its own fruit.
People do not pick figs from thornbushes, or grapes from briers.
I kept waiting for figs.
I kept watering and tending and hoping, because I loved what that tree said it would become one day.
But fruit is not a promise.
Fruit is what actually shows up, season after season.
You are allowed to look at the fruit honestly.
You are allowed to let what you see guide you more than what you hope.
What to do with what you see Listen, you do not need another six months of evidence.
You need to stop protecting yourself from the meaning of the evidence you already have.
Stop writing his explanations for him.
I know you do it.
He is tired.
He is stressed.
He has a lot going on.
Maybe all of that is true.
But let the gap stay a gap for once, and look at it.
Ask once, and ask clearly.
Tell him what you want.
Ask him what he wants.
Then pay attention to what he does in the weeks after, not only what he says that night.
Pull back and observe.
When you stop carrying it, you will see what he is willing to carry.
Sometimes it is very little.
That will hurt.
It is also the clarity you have been asking God for.
Believe the pattern.
If you have asked and waited and it is still unclear, that is your answer.
A man who has not chosen you after this long is telling you something, and accepting that he hasn't chosen you is where your peace starts.
How my story ended Everything had become one sided, and I was slowly disappearing.
I was no longer paying attention to my own needs because I had become consumed by his.
When I finally returned home from that last trip and told him how I truly felt, that was the end of the whole situationship.
The relationship had plenty of room for his problems, his feelings, and his needs.
It just did not have room for me.
I pray you see it sooner than I did.
And if you are seeing it right now, sis, that is not the end of hope.
That is the beginning of you coming back to yourself.
